Personal solar power station: LED lamp & mobile charger in one

Haarlem (The Netherlands) - The revolutionary new WakaWaka Power is an iPhone sized solar powered charger for mobile phone and tablets. The Power made a dazzling debut last week on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. After the first week more than 2000 backers pledged approx. $ 130.000 with the campaign. In one month, a sum was pledged of $419,472 on US-based Kickstarter and € 212,238 on Dutch platform OnePlanetCrowd, together practically $700,000 brought together by more than 7,000 backers from all over the world. Many, because they wanted to get their hands on the most efficient solar charger & light in the world and wanted to get it first. Others because they wanted to make a difference in the world and got a cool gadget as a reward.

The WakaWaka Power is the thinnest, lightest, most efficient lighting and charging unit featuring Sunpower solar cell, patented power management technology and triple battery power and provides the ability to charge any cell phone with a USB connector. The WakaWaka Power is the much anticipated follow-up to the hugely successful WakaWaka Light, winner of 4 Accenture Innovation Awards in 2012.

Extra battery capacity only during Kickstarter

Building on the original design the WakaWaka Power is thinner, lighter and features the Sunpower Solar cell, Intivation power management technology and triple the battery power of the previous version . All while delivering up to 60 lumens of bright, safe solar light for 100 hours on an 8 hour charge and the ability to charge most cell phones and tablets with a USB connection. Only during the campaign on Kickstarter, buyers profit from 25% extra battery capacity: the reward from the WakaWaka manufacturers for the enthusiasm of the backers. The standard battery of 2200 mAh has been augmented to 2750 mAh. This is giving users approx. 10 hrs of extra light, or more talk & surf time on their smart phone.

Power at your fingertips

The WakaWaka Power is the culmination of many months of design to create a product that would be a fashionable, yet powerful tool for everyday use. With the growth in mobile devices, there is a need to have a reliable, efficient, portable device that ensures that you will always have power at your fingertips. The WakaWaka Power was dramatically upgraded with the finest solar panel on the market today, producing 20% more power than any other unit. On less efficient solar panels you can see the ‘grid’ on the front. The new patented technology places the metal contacts on the back side of the solar cells providing more area to collect sunlight.

Charges all phones and tablets
Increased solar collection and optimize energy conversion results in more sunlight turned into energy faster. Despite the compact size the standard battery capacity and overall output have been tripled. At 2200 mAh LiPo, the battery can deliver 10 hours of powerful reading light and charge your cell Phone, tablet and any other USB powered device the same time. Tested to survive the harshest environments around the world the durable, water resistant WakaWaka Power with its sleek design and color options is well suited for everyday commuter use as well as disaster preparation, camping and military applications.

Wide acclaim
Although only a week on the market, the WakaWaka, winner of four Accenture Innovation Awards, has receivedallready wide acclaim, amongst which from Treehugger.com: ’As we become more experienced with natural disasters like superstorm Sandy, a device like this is something you may want to have in your emergency kit. But of course it’s also handy for carrying around as backup power if you’re planning on sucking your cell phone battery dry.”

WakaWaka Best in Class
The predecessor of the WakaWaka Power was recently tested against six other solar LED lamps in roughly the same price category. The WakaWaka Light came out best with an average of 7.5 hours of good reading light and more than enough light to illuminate a room. WakaWaka works in fact twice as long on a steady output than all of its direct competitors. The solar charge time is 75% full in 6 hrs around 50 degrees latitude (New York). The LED daily burn time : 100% brightness = 8 hrs; 50% brightness = 16 hrs; 10% brightness = 80 hrs. View the test results here.

Crowdfunding campaign
The suggested retail price for the WakaWaka Power is $79.00. During the Kickstarter event, visitors can purchase the WakaWaka Power for as little as $59.00/unit. The funds raised will be used to take the prototype into production ready for delivery to retail stores at the end of Q1.

Light Up Haiti
For each WakaWaka Power sold during the crowdfunding campaign, one WakaWaka Light will be delivered to our partner the UNHCR, for distribution to a Haitian family living off the power grid. Still today, 2 years after the devastating earthquake in 2010, 1.2 million Haitian families live in darkness, without any electricity, heavily dependent on toxic, expensive and extremely dangerous kerosene lamps.
